From National Audubon Important Bird Area (IBA) Information

"Alkali and Beck Lakes are located just southeast of Cody, Wyoming. The lakes and surrounding area support wetland and open water habitats that are heavily used by many species of waterfowl, shorebirds, waders, and landbirds. The area features a network of (both natural and manmade) shallow ponds. Alkali Lake is made up of alkali waters while Beck Lake and the upper reservoir are non-alkaline and therefore support various species of fish. The area serves as a staging area for spring and fall migration; provides nesting habitat for ruddy ducks, coots, grebes, blackbirds, and loons; and supports landbirds through all seasons. The lakes ownership includes: municipal, federal, state, and private owners.

"The site is a major staging area for fall and spring migration. It also is a year round food source for landbirds. It is a nesting area for Ruddy Ducks, coots, grebes, blackbirds, and loons.

"Serious threat of invasive and non-native plants and non-native predators. Minor threats of introduced animals, development, and hydrologic changes."

Meadowlark Audubon began weekly bird monitoring of the Beck Lake / Alkali Lake IBA Complex during the fall migration in 2005. Monitoring has been conducted during both spring and fall migrations every year since. The data collected during monitoring is housed in the Natural History Museum of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, and is shared with other databases. This information will provide a valuable resource for researchers now and into the future.
