Meadowlark Bird Count Data Now Available on the e-Bird Website

Deb Woodbridge (deceased), Meadowlark Audubon member, set up an account on the e-Bird Website to record sightings of birds during Meadowlark activities. The e-Bird Web site is a real-time, online checklist program for people interested in information on bird abundance and distribution. The e-Bird Web site is a cooperative effort of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society. The Web address is http://ebird.org/content/ebird/.

If you would like to see results for our local area, try the following: click on 'View & Explore Data'; then choose 'All birds at a location'; then choose 'Wyoming' and 'Hotspots in Wyoming'. At this point, you will have a number of choices of Wyoming locations for which you can view results.

We owe a debt of appreciation to Deb's memory for setting up the database for Meadowlark Audubon, and for bringing this important bird observation tool to the notice of Meadowlark members.

Cutting Russian Olives

Ten Meadowlark Members Showed Up For the Buchanan Wildlife Sanctuary Volunteer Work Day.

Saturday, November 10, 2007 - The following Meadowlark members wielded heavy-duty pruners, a chain saw, and Arsenal herbicide during the Saturday morning conservation effort to reduce the Russian Olive infestation at this delightful waterfowl veiwing area: Joyce Cicco, Kirk and Donna Haman, Destin Harrell and Lisa Marks, Sue Hatcher, John Ross, Dennis Saville, and Deborah Woodbridge. Also contributing was KaCey Ross, Cookie Maker Supreme, with her delicious assortment of homemade cookies and coffee.

The weather was favorable and the ground was relatively dry as volunteers implemented a management plan using mechanical removal of the Russian Olives, a non-native and invasive tree. Arsenal herbicide was also individually applied to the stumps to prevent regrowth. Studies have shown that elemination of Russian Olives revitalizes the soil, benefits wildlife habitat, and conserves ground and surface water. The Buchanan Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the land to the south-east of the intersection of the Meeteetse and Greybull highways, on the south side of the Cody airport.

Meadowlark welcomes all volunteers, regardless of membership in Meadowlark Audubon. Put on your boots, grab your gloves, and come join us when we announce our next Volunteer Work Day. Meadowlark Audubon will appreciate your efforts, and our wildlife and its habitat will be the big winners.
